Freelance Web Designer or Digital Agency? Which Is Right for Your Business?

An honest comparison from someone who’s worked alongside both.

One of the first questions I ask a new client isn’t about colours, logos or even what sort of website they want.

It’s much simpler.

“Who have you spoken to already?”

Sometimes the answer is another freelance designer.

Sometimes it’s a marketing agency.

Occasionally they’ve had quotes from five or six different companies, and they’re more confused than when they started.

The truth is that both freelancers and agencies have their place.

I’ve seen freelancers produce exceptional websites.

I’ve also seen agencies deliver incredible results.

I’ve also seen the opposite.

The decision shouldn’t come down to which option is “better.”

It should come down to which one is better for your business.

The Biggest Difference Isn’t Design

Most people assume the difference is quality.

It usually isn’t.

The biggest difference is how you work together.

When you hire a freelancer, you’re normally speaking directly to the person designing and building your website.

When you hire an agency, there’s often a process. You might speak to a salesperson. Then an account manager. Who briefs a designer. Who passes work to a developer. Who hands it back to the account manager.

None of that is wrong.

In fact, for large organisations it often works extremely well.

But for a small business owner who just wants a website that generates enquiries, it can sometimes feel like playing a game of Chinese whispers.

One Conversation Instead of Five

One of the things my clients mention most is that they always know who they’re speaking to.

If you phone me…you get me.

If you email…I’ll reply.

If something needs changed…I’m the person making the change.

There’s no support ticket.

No waiting for someone to pass a message to another department. No explaining your business to three different people. That direct relationship often makes projects smoother and quicker.

Your Business Doesn’t Become “Another Project”

Agencies can have dozens—or even hundreds—of active clients. Again, there’s nothing wrong with that.

But it does mean your project may be one of many moving through the system.

Working with a solo designer is often more personal. I get to know your business, your customers, your goals and your frustrations. That means the conversations become less about websites and more about growing your business. Because ultimately, that’s what a website should help you do.

Flexibility Matters

Businesses change. You might launch a new service, hire staff, move premises. Need a landing page for a marketing campaign. When you have a direct relationship with the person who built your website, those conversations tend to happen naturally, you don’t have to start from scratch every time.

Someone already understands your business.

But Agencies Have Advantages Too

I’d be doing you a disservice if I ignored this. For larger organisations, agencies often make perfect sense.

If you need:

  • multiple developers
  • specialist SEO teams
  • paid advertising management
  • branding departments
  • videographers
  • copywriters
  • ongoing campaigns

then an agency can bring together a wide range of expertise under one roof. That’s difficult for one person to replicate. For large national companies, that’s often exactly what’s needed.

So Who Is a Freelance Designer Best For?

In my experience, freelancers tend to be an excellent fit for:

  • Small businesses
  • Tradespeople
  • Restaurants
  • Professional services
  • Golf clubs
  • Local retailers
  • Start-ups
  • Family businesses

These businesses usually value:

  • Direct communication
  • Honest advice
  • Faster decisions
  • Personal service
  • Long-term relationships

Price Isn’t the Biggest Difference

People often assume freelancers are dramatically cheaper.

Sometimes they are, sometimes they aren’t.

The real value isn’t saving money. It’s knowing the person building your website genuinely understands your business. A website is rarely successful because someone used a clever animation or the latest design trend. It’s successful because someone understood your customers and built something that makes it easy for them to trust you.

My Approach

I don’t see myself as someone who simply builds websites. If that’s all you need, there are thousands of people who can do that. I see my role as helping businesses communicate more clearly online. Sometimes that means designing a new website. Sometimes it means improving an existing one and occasionally it means telling someone they don’t actually need a new website at all.

I think that’s an important distinction.

It sounds cheesy but my goal isn’t to sell you a website. It’s to help your business grow.

This does come with a caveat… In the 6 years of being a freelance web designer and graphic designer I have had a fair few new business clients who thought that a shiny new website was their business… by that I mean they thought once we hit the button and the website was live, that somehow it was a licence to print money, they didn’t have to work as this investment was going to do it for them… without exception those businesses are not still operating…

In these cases it wouldn’t have mattered whether they chose me or an agency, the business would have failed anyway.

Which Option Should You Choose?

If you’re a larger organisation with multiple stakeholders, ongoing marketing campaigns and complex digital requirements, an agency may well be the right choice.

If you’re a small or growing business looking for a personal service, direct communication and someone who’ll get to know your business rather than treat it as another project, working with a solo web designer could be the better fit.

There’s no universal right answer.

Only the right answer for your business.

Final Thoughts

The best websites don’t come from choosing the biggest company or the cheapest quote.

They come from choosing someone who listens, understands your goals and genuinely wants your business to succeed.

Whether that’s a freelancer or an agency depends entirely on what you’re looking for.

If you’d like to have a conversation about your business, your current website or your plans for the future, I’d be happy to chat—no sales pitch, no obligation, just honest advice.
