Starting a new website can feel surprisingly overwhelming, particularly when you are still shaping the business itself. You may have an idea, a business name and a broad sense of what you want to offer, but that does not mean you will automatically know what pages the website needs, what it should say or how it should help the business grow. You might be trying to decide whether you need online booking, payments, a shop, a portfolio or simply a professional place where potential customers can understand what you do and get in touch.

That uncertainty is completely normal.
Most people do not begin the website process with a finished plan. They begin with a collection of ideas, questions and possibilities that need to be organised into something practical. That is exactly why I created the NI Designer Strategy Session.
You do not need a finished website brief
There is often an assumption that you should approach a website designer with everything already figured out. You are expected to know how many pages you need, what functionality should be included, what the website should look like and how customers will move through it. In reality, those are some of the decisions a good website designer should help you make.
If you are starting a new business, you may still be deciding what services to prioritise, who your ideal customers are and how you want the business to be perceived. You might have looked at other websites for inspiration but found yourself with more questions than answers. One competitor’s website may have dozens of pages, while another keeps everything extremely simple. One may allow customers to book and pay online, while another asks people to call or complete an enquiry form.
Without experience in planning websites, it can be difficult to know which approach is right for your business.
A Strategy Session gives us time to discuss those questions before anyone starts designing or building anything. You do not need to arrive with a formal brief. You simply need to explain the business, what you are hoping to achieve and where you currently feel uncertain.
Turning an idea into a practical website plan
The earliest stage of a website project is often the most important. Decisions made during that stage influence the structure, content, cost and long-term usefulness of the finished website. If the purpose of the website is unclear, it is easy to spend money creating something that looks professional but does not actually support the business.
During a Strategy Session, we can begin by looking at the fundamentals. What does the business offer? Who are you trying to reach? What questions will potential customers have? What action should they take after visiting the website? Do you need to generate enquiries, take bookings, sell products, explain a specialist service or establish credibility while the business is still new?
Once those questions have clearer answers, it becomes much easier to decide what the website should contain. We can discuss the pages you are likely to need, the information customers will expect to find and any functionality that could make the business easier to operate. We can also identify features that may sound impressive but would add unnecessary cost or complexity at this stage.
The goal is not to make the website as large or complicated as possible. It is to develop the right website for where your business is now, with enough flexibility to evolve as the business grows.
What if you already have a website?
Strategy Sessions are not only for new businesses.
You may already have a website but feel that it no longer represents the business properly. Perhaps the company has changed since the website was created, new services have been introduced or the type of customer you want to attract has shifted. The website may look reasonably good but fail to generate enquiries, or you may know that something is wrong without being able to identify the real problem.
In that situation, the Strategy Session begins from a different starting point, but the objective is the same: to create clarity before committing to more work.
We can look at what you currently have, what is working and where visitors may be encountering problems. A complete rebuild might be the right answer, but it is not the only possible answer. The website may simply need stronger messaging, better calls to action, a clearer structure or improvements to a few important pages. You may discover that your immediate priorities would be better handled through a Designer Day rather than a full website project.
I would rather help you identify the appropriate solution than automatically recommend the most expensive one.
What can we discuss?
Every Strategy Session is shaped around the person and business in front of me. A new business planning its first website will naturally have different questions from an established company trying to improve an existing site.
For a new website, we might discuss:
- The purpose of the website
- Your target customers
- The services or products to prioritise
- The pages and content you are likely to need
- Online booking, payments or e-commerce
- How customers should contact or buy from you
- Branding, photography and written content
- A realistic budget and development process
- What should be prepared before the project begins
For an existing website, we might explore:
- Why it is not generating enough enquiries
- Whether the messaging is clear
- How easily visitors can find important information
- Areas where the design or content feels outdated
- Search engine visibility
- Mobile usability and performance
- Whether a rebuild is necessary
- Which improvements should be prioritised first
You do not need to restrict the conversation to one narrow topic. The benefit of speaking directly is that we can follow the discussion wherever it needs to go and examine how the different parts of your online presence fit together.
Why is it a paid session?
A Strategy Session costs £99 because it is a focused piece of professional work rather than an introductory sales call.
Charging for the session allows me to prepare properly, review any relevant information and concentrate on giving you useful, honest advice. The purpose is not to persuade you that every problem requires a new website. It is to help you make better decisions about what your business needs and where your investment is most likely to make a difference.
This also changes the nature of the conversation. Instead of spending the hour discussing only what NI Designer could sell you, we can use the time to explore your questions, challenge assumptions and consider different ways forward. You are paying for experience, perspective and practical direction.
If the Strategy Session leads to a new website project with NI Designer, the £99 can be credited towards that project under the terms of the service. In that situation, the session effectively becomes the first planning stage of the website rather than an additional expense.
What should you expect to leave with?
The aim is not to overwhelm you with dozens of new ideas. It is to help you organise the ideas you already have, identify what matters most and understand the next sensible step.
If you are starting a new business, you should leave with a clearer picture of what the website needs to achieve, what it is likely to include and what you should begin preparing. You may need to work on your branding, gather photographs, refine your services or start drafting content before the build begins. Knowing that in advance can save considerable time and prevent the project from stalling later.
If you already have a website, you should leave with a better understanding of its strengths, its weaknesses and the improvements most likely to produce a meaningful result. That may lead to a new website, a Designer Day or a smaller collection of focused changes.
Either way, you will be in a better position to make an informed decision.
A sensible first step
You do not need to know exactly what your website should look like before speaking to a website designer. You do not need a finished sitemap, professionally written content or a detailed technical specification.
You simply need a business, an idea or a problem that you want to move forward.
A Strategy Session gives us the space to take that starting point and begin turning it into a workable plan. It is particularly valuable if you are at the beginning of the process and want to avoid expensive mistakes, but it is equally useful if an existing website has left you uncertain about what to do next.
Good websites do not begin with colours, layouts or technology. They begin with understanding the business, the customer and the job the website needs to perform.
That is the thinking behind Strategy Sessions: create clarity first, then decide what should be built.
