Down Cruising Club, established in 1956, is a vibrant sailing community nestled on the western shores of Strangford Lough in Northern Ireland. The club’s unique headquarters is the ‘Petrel,’ a decommissioned lightship permanently moored at Ballydorn, near Killinchy. This distinctive clubhouse serves as a central hub for approximately 100 members who share a passion for all aspects of boating and cruising.
The ‘Petrel’ is moored off the west shore within the entrance channel between Rainey and Sketrick Islands. It features a 100-meter-long pontoon and an extended dinghy dock, with a gangway providing access to the shore. Depths of 3 to 4 meters are available on the outside berths, accommodating a variety of vessels. Visitors are encouraged to contact Down Cruising Club in advance to arrange mooring and access.
Navigating to Ballydorn requires careful attention due to the tidal currents in the area. The entrance between Rainey and Sketrick Islands has a depth of approximately 1.5 meters at low water springs, which is a crucial consideration for deeper-draft vessels. Tidal streams can reach speeds of up to 5 knots, necessitating meticulous planning, ideally timing approaches to coincide with slack water.
Beyond its sailing activities, Down Cruising Club offers a rich social calendar, fostering camaraderie among members. The club’s location provides picturesque views of Strangford Lough and is in proximity to historical sites such as the ancient church at Nendrum on Mahee Island. This blend of sailing, history, and natural beauty makes Down Cruising Club a cherished institution for sailing enthusiasts in Northern Ireland.
